Edward III Double Leopard Florin Coin
An extremely rare 1344 Edward III Double Leopard gold coin sold for £174,600 (including fees) at a Noonans Mayfair auction in March 2022, found by a metal detectorist in Norfolk, UK. This “Crispus” type coin is one of only five known surviving examples, making it one of the most valuable English coins.
Sold Price: £174,600 (Hammer price £140,000 + fees).
Discovery: Found in October 2019 by Andy Carter in Reepham, Norfolk.
Significance: Issued for only seven months in 1344 before being withdrawn, as they were valued too high at six shillings and didn’t circulate well.
Market Context: A separate example sold for over
in 2006, which was a record at that time.
The only privately owned example sold for £460,000 in 2006. It was later resold privately for an undisclosed amount that experts state established it as the “most valuable English coin of all time”
