Aethelred Penny Coin

Aethelred Penny Coin
Extremely Fine: Upto £16,500

The silver pennies of Æthelred II (the Unready, 978–1016) are some of the most collected Anglo-Saxon coins due to their diverse designs and historical link to the “Danegeld” ransoms. While exact mintage figures for the era are unknown, modern researchers estimate that millions were produced across over 60 mints to meet military and tribute demands.

High-Value Rare Types
The value of an Æthelred penny is primarily driven by its type and the rarity of the mint/moneyer combination.
Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) Type: This is the “holy grail” of Anglo-Saxon coinage, featuring the Lamb of God and a dove instead of the king’s portrait. Only about 24 specimens are known.
Value: Recent examples have realised £15,000 (Baldwin’s of St. James’s, 2020) and 18,500 CHF (approx. £16,500) at auctions.
Benediction Hand Type: A rare variation of the Hand type where the fingers are in a blessing gesture.
Value: A specimen from the Bath mint is currently listed for £5,950 at Sovereign Rarities.
Last Small Cross Type (Rare Mints): While common in major cities, examples from rare mints like Bridport or Cissbury are highly prized.
Value: A Bridport mint penny is priced at £1,350, and a Cissbury mint specimen realised £1,500 at auction in 2025.
