Edward II Silver Penny Coin

Edward II Silver Penny Coin
Extremely Fine: £500

Finding a valuable coin from the reign of Edward II (1307–1327) is a challenge for collectors because his coins look almost identical to those of his father, Edward I. They are distinguished by subtle “class” details, such as the shape of the crown or the lettering.

The Most Valuable Edward II Coins
While standard pennies are common, high-grade examples from rare provincial mints or specific “classes” command the highest prices.
Edward II Silver Penny, Bury St Edmunds Mint (Class 11c): This is one of the more sought-after provincial mints. An “Extremely Fine” (EF) specimen with a clear, sharp portrait can be valued at approximately £450–£500.
Edward II Silver Penny, Berwick-upon-Tweed Mint: Coins from this northern mint are highly collectable due to the town’s constant struggle between England and Scotland. A high-grade example (Class 11b) is valued around £250–£300.
Edward II Silver Penny, Durham Mint (Bishop de Bury): These feature a unique “cross moline” (the personal mark of the Bishop) in one of the reverse quarters. A “Very Fine” example is typically valued at £180–£225.
Edward II Silver Penny, London Mint (Class 15): The final class of his reign is rarer than the early ones. A high-quality specimen from the London mint is valued at £140–£165.

How to Tell it’s Edward II
Collectors look for these “Class 11-15” markers to separate him from Edward I:
The Crown: Often has larger, more ornate fleur-de-lis.
The Legend: Usually reads EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB.
The Bust: The face often appears slightly more “sunken” or elongated compared to the earlier Edward I types.
Rarity by Mint
Common: London, Canterbury.
Scarce: Durham, Bury St Edmunds.
Rare: Berwick-upon-Tweed, Newcastle (very limited production).
