Eadred Crowned Bust Silver Penny Coin
Fine: £300-£750
Very Fine: £2,950
Extremely Fine: £3,750

King Eadred (946–955 AD) is the Crowned Bust Silver Penny. While most of Eadred’s coinage features a simple two-line horizontal design with no portrait, the Crowned Bust variety is significantly rarer and more valuable.

Crowned Bust Silver Penny
  • Description: This variety features a stylized, crowned portrait of King Eadred on the obverse and a small cross pattée on the reverse.
  • Market Value: A specimen in “About Very Fine” (aVF) condition was recently valued at £2,950, while examples in “Very Fine” (VF) condition can be valued as high as £3,750.
  • Mintage: Precise mintage figures do not exist for the 10th century, as coins were struck by hand by various moneyers across England. However, this “Crowned Bust” type is classified as “Extremely Rare” compared to the standard “Two-Line” horizontal type.
    Common “Two-Line” Silver Penny
If you have the more common type (no portrait, moneyer’s name in two horizontal lines), the values are typically lower but still significant for collectors.
    • Average Value: Usually ranges between £320 and £750 depending on the moneyer and condition.
    • Mints & Moneyers: Mint names were rarely included on these coins. Notable moneyers include Ingelgar (York), Dune (North Western type), and Agatard (North Midlands).
    • Estimated Rarity: Over 80 moneyers are known for Eadred’s reign, but many are known only from a single surviving specimen.
